Safety Boat Equipment Checklist
(Aligned with Australian Sailing Guidelines)
1. Boat Equipment
- Outboard Motor – In good working condition. Test before deployment.
- Fuel – Adequate supply for the session, including reserve fuel.
- Tow Line – Minimum 20m, strong, floatable, and easily accessible.
- Anchor – With suitable chain and line for the location.
- Paddle or Oar – For manual propulsion if needed.
- Bailer or Bucket – For water removal or general use.
2. Communication
- VHF Radio – Fully functional with a backup battery or power source.
- Mobile Phone – In a waterproof case (backup to the radio).
- Whistle or Horn – For signaling other vessels or crew.
3. Personal Safety Equipment
- Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) Type 1– Approved by Australian Standards for all safety boat crew.
- Spare PFDs Type 1 – Minimum of two, in case of emergencies.
- Rescue Throw Bag – 15m minimum floating line for quick rescues.
- First Aid Kit – Waterproof and stocked according to Australian Sailing’s Safety Requirements.
4. Emergency Tools
- Knife – Sharp, sheathed safety knife for cutting lines.
- Torch/Flashlight – Waterproof, with spare batteries or rechargeable.
- Kill Cord – Spare, in addition to the one in use.
- Fire Extinguisher – Marine-grade and compliant with local regulations.
- Tool Kit – Includes screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, and duct tape for repairs.
5. Navigation and Race Support
- Compass or GPS – For navigation and locating marks.
- Race Course Map – Laminated or waterproof for reference.
- Flags – Per Racing Rules of Sailing (e.g., Shorten Course).
- Stopwatch or Timer – For race timing or sequence management.
6. Environmental Readiness
- Sunscreen – High SPF for crew protection.
- Water Bottles – Sufficient for crew hydration.
- Protective Clothing – Hats, sunglasses, and wet-weather gear.
7. Race-Specific Equipment
- Course Marks – Inflatable buoys and markers as required.
- Mark Anchors and Lines – Properly weighted and prepared.
- Course Setting Tools – Tape measure, marker pen, and record sheets.
8. Pre-Departure Checks (Australian Sailing Protocols)
- Safety Briefing – Outline roles, emergency procedures, and radio protocols.
- Engine Check – Test the motor, kill cord, and fuel levels.
- Radio Check – Ensure clear communication with race control and other vessels.
- Inventory Check – Confirm all listed equipment is present and functional.
